Environment and Sustainable Agriculture Project (ESAP)

ESAP is a conservation and development initiative of Fort Portal Diocese which started in 1996 as a pilot project in Kitagwenda County –Kamwenge District. It operates in all the Districts that make up Fort Portal Diocese.  The major activities of ESAP are geared towards promoting and supporting local communities to improve their agronomic practices, environmental and Natural Resources management

To support communities in Fort Portal Diocese in Sustainable Natural Resource management through capacity building to improve on their quality of life.



  • Promote legal awareness on policies and legal frame work for management of Natural resources most of them unknown to community who bear significant responsibility on their successful implementation.
  • To support community around  forest reserves to access resources from the forest through collaborative processes
  • To empower communities for sustainable use and mgt of ENR

Main Activities

  • Developing wetlands and crater lakes management plans
  • Facilitating Collaborative forest management processes
  • Facilitating the development of Bye laws on Environment & Natural Resources  
  • Promote income generating activities
  • Initiate and implement viable problem animal management initiatives
  • Work with communities to mobilize self capital to improve their income base
  • Build the capacity of the CBOs involved in natural resource management to carry out ENRM related initiatives (tree planting, soil & water conservation etc)

·         Strengthen the capacity of DSSD Caritas Fort portal to implement NR related activities and organizational capacity.


Main Donors are CARE International in Uganda

Areas such as these can be conserved by construction of contour bands to stop soil erosion

Conservation of wetland resources contribute to house hold income. A women’s group engaging in handcraft making in Mugusu Sub county Kabarole District.
